Wallangra Houses comprises a pair of dwellings with a colonnaded frontage, where concrete columns define the edge to the street with a measured civic character. The project continues the studio’s ongoing exploration of dual-occupancy housing in Australia, reworking a familiar residential typology through form, scale, and presence.
A civic front
In response to the prevailing white-box language of suburban housing, the design takes cues from civic architecture. The regular rhythm of the columns and the measured depth of the façade create a composed presence, giving the houses a distinct character that remains appropriate to their residential setting.
The columnar frame
The columns provide a restrained device for rethinking the suburban front edge, bringing verticality and order to the streetscape. They also mediate the western sun and provide privacy for the interiors, while allowing the living spaces to remain open, light-filled, and closely connected to their outlook.
