Located in a dormitory suburb of Newcastle, Jesmond Housing is a co-living project designed for university students. Defined by a central courtyard that serves as its collective heart, the project adopts an enclosed typology — turning inward rather than engaging openly with the street.

An inward typology
In response to a challenging neighbourhood context, the building presents a reserved exterior and a protected interior. The strategy establishes a clear boundary between shared student life and the wider context, giving residents a sheltered community of their own.

A defining courtyard
The building organises itself entirely around the central courtyard. Walkways at upper levels overlook and interact with the shared volume below, while apartments open directly into it. Densely planted and anchored by a pool, the courtyard becomes a place for gathering, working, and everyday living.
