Verandah Houses
A proposal for a pair of houses within a heritage conservation area in suburban Sydney, the project responds to its surroundings through rigorous contextual analysis and a considered civic presence.
An analytical approach
The design began with a close study of six neighbouring buildings. Despite their varied styles, each shares a consistent architectural language: vertical and horizontal elements, pitched roof forms and solid, grounded bases. This shared language became the defining principle for the proposal, translating the street’s collective character into a contemporary dual-occupancy development.
A civic threshold
At ground level, a colonnade of brick columns lends the pair a quiet civic presence — a subtle departure from the typical suburban residential streetscape. Its contemporary expression, developed through restrained detailing and drawn from the surrounding context, allows the new work to sit comfortably alongside its older neighbours.
