Situated within a Heritage Conservation Area in Randwick, Ethne House is an alteration and addition to an existing Federation cottage. The project is conceived as a measured insertion that preserves the domestic scale of the streetscape while introducing a sophisticated new layer of contemporary living.
A screened addition
To the primary street frontage, the new upper volume is deliberately restrained. Wrapped in a veil of vertical battens, this addition sits lightly above the original cottage, echoing the rhythm of the low-rise streetscape characterised by repeating hip-and-valley roof forms while remaining quietly distinct from the historic fabric.
A robust rear presence
Large openings, deep reveals, and crisp edges give the rear a more open character in contrast to the enclosed frontage. Perpendicular to the road, the rear elevation terminates the view down the cul-de-sac, establishing a strong contemporary presence at the end of the street while creating a more open, light-filled way of living at the heart of the home.
