Adjoining Sydney’s most iconic beach, Ramsgate House is a sculpted residence that calibrates domestic privacy with coastal public life. The design transposes the classical loggia to the streetscape of North Bondi, introducing a rhythmic threshold of arches that mediates between the public and private.
Arched loggia as spatial threshold
The front façade’s arched loggia serves as the project’s defining gesture and core spatial strategy. Acting as a covered in-between zone, this deep threshold creates a nuanced boundary that frames moments of connection to the streetscape while preserving internal privacy.
A sinuous journey
The curved geometry of the façade extends deep into the interior. A sinuous four-storey stairwell anchors the space, culminating in a copper-clad pavilion with elevated ocean views. Toward the rear, the arch motif reappears, framing articulated steel windows within the stucco façade and drawing northern light deep into the double-height living area.
A grounded coastal atmosphere
The interior amplifies the spatial and atmospheric qualities of the architecture through a carefully calibrated palette of muted, sun-washed finishes. The space cultivates a relaxed yet sophisticated coastal atmosphere, with the arches on both the front and rear contributing to the home’s passive environmental performance.
