Gables House
Set on a steep, fast-moving street lined with traditional tiled roofs in a cliffside eastern suburb of Sydney, the alteration and addition reimagine the experience of passing by. A new upper volume introduces a zigzagging parapet that abstracts the gabled roofs of its neighbours, animating the elevation with an ever-changing street presence.
A roofline in motion
Rather than a single, flat gesture, the parapet folds and steps along the street’s contour, shifting in profile with each change of angle. The result is a subtle, dynamic disruption against the neighbourhood’s otherwise uniform rooflines.
An evening reveal
Realised through simple construction, the upper volume is clad in vertical battens, its zigzagging white silhouette appearing to float above a dark, solid garage base. By night, interior light filters through the windows behind, giving the façade a soft glow, extending the house’s ever-changing character into the evening.
