Future(s) Housing
In a residential precinct defined by Art Deco brick buildings in Sydney, the proposal reimagines a modest, low-rise housing block as affordable housing for contemporary living. The project explores how the city’s existing brick stock, common but not individually heritage-listed, might be retained, upgraded, and extended to meet present housing need.
A considered transformation
The proposal restores and reinterprets the existing structure rather than replacing it. Its brick walls, window rhythm, and street presence are preserved, while the vertical brick columns are extended upward to form a raised parapet that frames a new floor set behind it. Calibrated to sightlines from the street and neighbouring properties, the transformed building settles comfortably into its urban context.
A layered composition
The original two-storey block, comprising four apartments, is reconfigured into seven dwellings across three levels. The retained floors are adapted for affordable housing, while the new rooftop addition is conceived as a penthouse, extending the building's life through a considered mix of housing types.
